Preparing for Spring

Many of my favorite summer flowers have faded away for the season, but a few are still going strong. The red-leaf cannas especially took off in late summer, and now frame our backyard with bright red flowers. We also have a large pot of green-leaf cannas on our deck, which is visited several times daily by a female ruby throated hummingbird. The cannas seem to be her favorite, so next year I plan on having several pots full of them on the deck. When I dig up the tubers this fall, there will surely be more than enough to replant next spring. They multiply like crazy!

Although I'm missing my summer favorites, I certainly look forward to preparing for next spring. Soon, a new shipment of iris and tulip bulbs will arrive, and I've already started preparing a new flower bed especially for them. Our next door neighbors have a vigorous wisteria vine that grows along our fence, and that will be the perfect backdrop for these spring beauties. I look forward to the day when I can sit Samedh down among the flowers and snap a quick photo of him.
